A Kieran Winman volley was the difference as Sholing beat Ringwood 1-0 in their FA Youth Cup match at the Universal Stadium.

Team News: Owen Royl started despite playing for the first team against Hamble 48 hours prior to the match.

In what proved to be a tight affair, it was the Boatmen that had the first opportunity of the game, with Kieran Winman having a go from distance, but his shot flew wide of the post.

Ringwood replied with a couple of effort of their own, the best of which came when Jamie Kemp broke free and fired the ball across goal, but the cross evaded everyone in the penalty area.

Owen Royl spurned a good chance when he headed Winman’s cross over the crossbar just before the half hour mark.

The best opportunity of the first half then fell the visitor’s way, with Jack Attrill managing to clear Kemp effort off the line.

Winman had another long range strike flash past the post before Callum Waughman slashed a volley over the bar, as neither side managed to really dominate proceedings in what was a cagey opening 45 minutes. HT 0-0

The deadlock however was broken in the 53rd minute, when Jamie Staples corner was excellently converted by Kieran Winman with a first time volley into the roof of the net from close range.

Jack Attrill then sent a free kick over the bar with Sholing finally getting their grips on the match with crisper passing, and attacking with more intent.

But when Owen Royl was caught in possession, Ringwood countered, and nearly got their equaliser had Kemp not missed the target when put through on goal.

Laurie Smith then made a darting 30-yard run before unleashing a ferocious strike on goal, which was tipped away fantastically by Aaron Whitmarsh to keep the Boatmen’s lead intact.

The away side continued to push for a leveller, with Sam Drake’s free kick and Ben Bayes close range effort both saved again by Whitmarsh and with two minutes to go, Whitmarsh was again the hero for Sholing, as he tipped a thunderous effort from 30 yards on the crossbar to deny Ringwood once again, and seal the Boatmen’s place in the next round (away to Andover). FT 1-0
