Sholing's development side got off to a poor start in their seventh season of the Wyvern Combination League campaign. A brace from Naz Stone saw them leave Cams Alder pointless.

Team News: Sholing were only able to field fourteen players from their squad with some players away, injured or required by 1st team. Ryan Farrant, Rory Wood & Jamie Blackburn made their Sholing debuts.

Sholing got the game underway at a very sunny Cams Alder. In the opening exchanges both sides very cancelling one another out. Then a ball over the top evades Liam Attrill and falls to Matthew Simm, however the winger manage to tackle himself and knocked the ball out of play without testing Josh Helm in the Sholing goal. Then on six minutes Sholing had their first chance however Jamie Blackburn miskicked the ball however it fell to Centre Forward Ryan Wood but he hit his shot wide.

The game continued to be scrappy and Naz Stone was lucky not to receive a yellow card for his challenge on Jack Fisher. On twenty five minutes the deadlock was broken when Ben Tiffin had his shot blocked but Naz Stone was quickest to react and slot the loose ball home. Sholing continued to press for an equaliser and won a series of corners Ryan Wood and Jamie Blackburn both had chances but could capitalise on the pressure applied.

On thirty eight minutes Fareham had looked to have doubled their lead when a corner found Tom Tierney but his effort was headed off the line by Jamie Blackburn. HT 1-0

Fareham come out firing on all cylinders and Waledin Ahmed could have doubled their lead in the opening minute but the midfielder managed to head the ball wide. Liam Attrill had a chance to equalise but he failed to hit the target. On fifty two minutes Ryan Wood was fouled 25 yds out but Jamie Staples hit his kick into the defending wall. Then it was Jamie Staples that was fouled in a similar place but once again the Fareham defence stood firm. Next Jamie Blackburn’s corner finds Jamie Staples but the winger fails to test Barnaby Conaghan.

Just over the hour Fareham doubled their lead when a break on the right picked out Naz Stone and with a left foot strike from 20 yards curled the ball round Josh Helm.

Harvey Cooper replaced Ryan McAndrew on sixty two minutes, five minutes later Steve Blackburn made a double substitution with Fraser McLean and Tanaka Madzvamutse replacing Ryan Farrant and Jamie Staples. A rash tackle by Jack Attrill on Waledin Ahmed earned the full back a yellow card on sixty eight minutes.

The next five minutes were taken up with substitutions Harvey Cooper replaced Robert Taw. Steve Blackburn made his final changing bringing off Jamie Blackburn for Connor Pearson. Then Fareham made their final substitution with Kelvin Lichowe replacing Waledin Ahmed. Fareham saw out the game to get them off to a winning start. FT 2-0

Report by Greg Dickson

Steve Blackburn reflected on his first League game in charge of the Boatmen “We missed our chances in the first half we had four good chances and needed to put one of them away. However we went in 1-0 down to a good strike that was really their only shot of the half to be fair. Fareham kept the ball well but didn’t really get in behind us. In the second half more the same really we pressed them higher and got wider and created the more chances but their finishing was better. So with one game out of the way we have some boys away, some unfit and a few with the first team it is what it is”

Sholing's development side got their first win 48 hours after their draw at AFC Stoneham. The young Boatmen were up against a Bosham side that looked like they twice their age. A good all round performance from the young Boatmen eclipsed the Bosham tactics that was more suited to rugby.

Team News: Sholing once again had a changed line up with players working and away at Festivals. Steve Blackburn even relied on Cameron Ross coming back from his 1st day’s holiday for his Development debut. With Jean-Luc not available for the 1st team he was able to fill in for Blackers. Aaron Whitmarsh stepped in for the holidaying Josh Helm. Also good news was that Marlon Mason had recover from the illness he suffered during the AFC Stoneham match.

The game commenced under picturesque blue skies followed by a perfect blue moon under the floodlit stadium and a crowd boosted by 1st team supporters attending. Jean-Luc Ramdin was generating his pace down the right side of the pitch causing Ryan Jones a lot of issues. On eight minutes Jean-Luc cut inside again and sent in a rasping shot that just went wide of Bray’s goal. Jake Hoole on the left was also running the Bosham defence a little ragged and his cut in set up Rory Wood whose snap shot was deflected away for the first corner of the game. Bosham were presented with their first chance on fifteen minutes when skipper Duncan Brown fouled Tom Gray just outside the penalty area, but Ollie Sturt placed his free kick over Aaron Whitmarsh’s bar. Sholing were awarded another free kick for a heavy challenge Jamie Blackburn took the kick and found Rory Wood’s head but his effort was deflected wide for another corner.

We then had a delay in play when goalkeeper Jazz Bray needed time to recover following an injury from the collision with Marlon Mason both going for a loose ball. On thirty minutes the first scare for Sholing occurred when Aaron Whitmarsh parried a cross and with Jack Attrill facing his goal deflected the ball goal wards but the full back reacted quick enough to reach the ball and hook away for a throw in.

A minute later eventually referee McFarlene produced a yellow card when centre back Callum Fewell wiped out Marlon Mason right on the touch line resulting in the centre back colliding with the pitch side fencing before being cautioned. A flurry of free kicks ensued through the pace of Jake Hoole & Jean-Luc Ramdin as well as the young Boatmen playing the ball around frustrating the Bosham players. The Boatmen again were denied a goal from Rory Wood when Jazz Bray parried away his shot to maintain the deadlock. HT 0-0

The second half commenced under a blue moon and the strong aroma of chips filling the night air along with what appeared to be a rave emulating from the Bowls club. Sholing got off to the perfect start five minutes in when Marlon Mason was upended by Jazz Bray inside the six yard area but referee McFarlene only showed the Bosham keeper a yellow card deeming he had made a genuine attempt to get the ball. Marlon Mason stepped up and put his spot kick the other side of Bray into the net. This goal spurred the Boatmen to step up a gear and their tireless running was certainly taking its toll on the Bosham player’s fitness.

On sixty one minutes Bosham made their first substitution bringing on Will Lewis for Harry Lidster who was getting no joy from debutant Cameron Ross. Four minutes later Steve Blackburn decided fresh legs were needed to keep the high intensity of the game Marlon Mason was replaced by Jamie Staples. The winger got into the game immediately producing so good runs deep down the wings. Likewise on the right Jean-Luc & Jake Hoole were continuing to cause the Bosham defence trouble. With Bosham only naming two subs they made their final change on seventy one minutes replacing Tom Gray with Ife Aina. Two minutes later saw two cautions within sixty seconds Harvey Craig was adjudged to have fouled Sturt, then it was Bosham captain Curtis Blake for a foul on Jean-Luc Ramdin.

Ryan Farrant was called upon to replace Callum Waughman again just to freshen up the legs following Wednesday night’s game. Steve Blackburn’s tactics were rewarded when on seventy eight minutes Sholing finally breeched the Bosham goal for the second time it was Jamie Staples pace and cross found Jamie Blackburn but the midfielders effort was blocked and cleared but fell to Jake Hoole some twenty plus yards out whose left footed shot looped over Jazz Bray. A series of corners kept Sholing on the front foot with Aaron Whitmarsh a virtual spectator in the Sholing goal.

Steve Blackburn made his final change with ten minutes to go with Tanaka Madzvamutse replacing centre forward Rory Wood. A minute later Sholing capitalised a good team performance when Jake Hoole’s corner was drilled in and found full back Jack Attrill to slot the ball home from inside the six yard area. In the dying minutes of the game Bosham had one last chance to get on the score sheet. Ife Aina’s free kick was parried away by Aaron Whitmarsh for a corner and this was the last action of the match.  FT 3-0

Steve Blackburn reflected on a good all round team performance “Tonight the boys stepped up to the plate 48 hours after the Stoneham draw. It was a good all round performance with a good debut for Cameron Ross who now has given me a good problem with team selection for Wednesday night’s trip to Petersfield. Tonight’s home win hopefully has put us in good stead for the coming long season and with players coming in filling places the squad looks strong enough to compete this season we now move on to two more league games next week ”.

Man of the Match: Duncan Brown

Sholing's Development side left the HP Arena with a hard fought point playing much better than on the opening day at Cams Alder. They played a more high intense game and were unlucky not to come away with all three points.

Team News: Sholing once again had a changed line up with players working and away. Steve Blackburn made four changes from Saturday’s defeat Connor Pearson came in for Jack Fisher & Duncan Brown made his debut for Harry Butler. Ryan Farrant & Jamie Staples dropped to the bench to make way for Marlon McLean & Jake Hoole. Lining up for AFC Stoneham was former Sholing striker Luke Bergg.

AFC Stoneham got the game underway in front of a large crowd on a warm evening at the HP Arena. Sholing had the early exchanges and Liam Attrill found Rory Wood but the Sholing forward couldn’t test Robbie Wride in the Stoneham goal and the keeper collected the ball easily. On three minutes this time Rory Wood turned provider when he found Marlon Mason who under pressure got in his shot but this time it went over Wrides crossbar. Four minutes later Jake Hoole looking lively on the left was fouled and Marlon Mason curled the ball around the wall only for Wride to save yet again. Good link up play between Callum Waughman & Jamie Blackburn again found Rory Wood but again the striker failed to hit the target.

AFC Stoneham were very good with counter attacks and getting the ball wide to the pacey Mhiza Tafadzwa who found the Sholing by-line on a number times and got his cross in but Duncan Brown stood firm at the heart of the Sholing defence marshalling his troops. Again Jake Hoole was causing the Stoneham defence trouble with his runs and again linked up with Rory Wood but Jakes effort was blocked for a corner. From the resulting corner Liam Attrill’s header was headed away by Dan Larcombe.

With 15 mins gone again Tafadzwa’s cross again evaded everyone in the Sholing area. Duncan Brown’s long ball was headed by defender in to the path of Jake Hoole but his cross was not met by the on rushing forwards. Duncan Brown was penalised for a tackle but the defender redeemed himself clearing the Stoneham free kick.

Again it was good link up play between Jake Attrill, Callum Waughman, Jake Hoole found Rory Wood but again the ball went agonisingly wide. Luke Cron’s long ball was headed by Duncan Brown in to the path of Tafadzwa who picked out skipper Ryan Caws but he failed to make contact. Marlon Mason again found Jake Hoole who unleased a left footed shot again just failing to hit the target.

The deadlock was broken on thirty six minutes when Mhiza Tafadzwa got to the by-line and his deep cross was tapped in by Jamie Chilcott. Sholing almost hit back immediately when Marlon Mason once again found Jake Hoole who turned and hit his shot just over the bar. Mark Stupple in the Stoneham dugout vented his feelings on his team’s poor defending. Again good link up play between Jamie Blackburn, Callum Waughman & Rory Wood resulted in a corner Jamie Blackburn’s deep corner found Rory Wood but again the striker saw his header go over Wrides bar. Last action of the 1st half saw Connor Pearson stop Tafadzwa on the left. HT 1-0

Before the second half could commence both sides replaced their No 7’s Jabez Setteri was replaced by Max Cullen & Marlon Mason (who was feeling ill) was replaced by Tanaka (TK) Madzvamutse. Former Sholing forward Luke Bergg failed to double Stoneham’s lead when he hit his shot over the bar. TK was causing the Stoneham defender problems with his pace along with Jake Hoole. Jake Hoole won a corner and from Jamie Blackburn’s corner TK Madzvamutse restored parity within six minutes of being on the field. However seven minutes later Stoneham regained the lead when a long ball committed Josh Helm to foul the on rushing forward outside the eighteen yard box but referee Cotterall played an advantage and Mhiza Tafadzwa was left to tap the ball into an empty net.

Four minutes later both sides again made substitutions with Josh Rose being replaced by Ryan Sanger and Jamie Blackburn was replaced by Ryan Farrant. Josh Helm’s free kick found Jake Hoole who turned inside and hit his shot wide. Again it was good link up play that drew Sholing level Josh Helm found Ryan Farrant who in turn picked out Jake Hoole and his cross found Rory Wood to beat Robbie Wride on sixty seven minutes.

On seventy nine minutes the first yellow card was produced when a rugby tackle by Ryan Sanger on Rory Wood was enough for Referee Mark Cotterall. This was followed two minutes later when Jake Hoole was penalised for a foul but was booked for dissent. Callum Waughman made way for Fraser McLean with eight minutes remaining. Harvey Craig became a passenger for the last five minutes picking up cramp. Both sides battled until the final whistle. FT 2-2

Steve Blackburn reflected on his first point for the Boatmen : “We deserved to get more out of tonight’s game we restricted their chances on goal. However we went in 1-0 down again we were missing headers from five yards out and we created many chances. In the second half we nullified their best player we double up on him and the changes helped us. All three subs tonight got into the game well. Tonight’s attitude was very positive on another day we would have taken all three points. With a twenty four hour break we will be struggling to get players fit so it will again be a different line up for Friday but we have to live with it at the moment”.

Rory Wood continued his goal trail hitting his first hattrick for the Boatmen. The Subs also played their part with Jake Hoole grabbing a brace and Marlon Mason finding the net. Jack Attrill scored along with a first goal for Ryan Farrant

Team News: Yet again Sholing had a changed line up with players working and away. Steve Blackburn had to make a late change to the line-up with Jake Hoole stuck in traffic Jamie Staples moved up from the bench. Ryan Farrant replaced the unavailable Callum Waughman and Harry Butler returned to be on the bench.

The game was watched by a crowd mainly made up of Sholing supporters. Petersfield despite their lowly place in the table almost got off to the perfect start when a poor back pass by Tanaka (TK) Madzvamutse was eventually blocked by Jean-Luc Ramdin. Skipper Duncan Brown fouled Will Codling and Aaron Whitmarsh comfortably saved Sean Barnes free kick. The next chance fell to George Burns but the striker put his header wide without troubling Aaron Whitmarsh. After five minutes play Sholing took charge of the game with TK & Jean-Luc causing Ben Small plenty of trouble on the right with their pacey runs. Sholing’s first effort fell to the equally lively Jamie Staples whose left foot shot was saved by Morel in the Petersfield goal. TK was fouled by Essai and Jamie Blackburn’s free kick was saved by Morel. Inter play between Ryan Farrant, TK & Jean-Luc resulted in another corner. Jamie Staples corner was planted right on the keeper were panic ensued and the Petersfield defence managed to scramble the ball away. Again it was the Sholing midfield that was applying the pressure with a long ball over the top to Jamie Staples beating the offside trap but the winger over hit his cross to Jean-Luc who failed to connect with the cross.

On fourteen minutes Sholing got the opening goal when Ryan Farrant & Jamie Blackburn worked the ball for Ryan Farrant to put Rory Wood through and the striker calmly lobbed the onrushing Morel. Three minutes later a heavy tackle on Ryan Farrant resulting in the ball falling to Jean-Luc but referee Paul Hicks halted play to caution Matthew Malin. From the resulting free kick taken by Jamie Blackburn Captain Duncan Brown headed wide. Again Sholing won another corner through good inter play between Rory Wood & jean-Luc but Morel was deemed to be fouled from the kick. On twenty three minutes Sholing were denied a second goal when TK’s shot was blocked and fell to Jamie Blackburn whose shot was blocked on line by Ben Small. Again it was TK & Jean-Luc causing the trouble TK was fouled Jean-Luc’s free kick was blocked but he collected the rebound and teased the defender but he put his effort just over the bar much to Morel’s relief.

On thirty two minutes Rory Wood thought he had his second goal when he was allowed to twist and turn and his strike just went wide of the upright. Three minutes later Sholing were rewarded for their effort with a second goal. Jean-Luc throw in found TK who played the ball back to Jean-Luc who in turn found Rory Wood who beat Morel in the Petersfield goal. A minute later there was a concern when Rory Wood went down with no one near him but recovered after some treatment. Five minutes before half time a scare at the Sholing end when Jamie Staples under hit his back pass but George Burns failed to trouble Aaron Whitmarsh. Two minutes later Rory Wood completed his first Sholing hattrick thanks to the link up play between TK & Jean-Luc. Jamie Blackburn set up Ryan Farrant but he failed to test the keeper. With the game in stoppage time a quick throw in found Jamie Staples who was fouled by Elliott Spencer, Jamie Staples took the free kick which was scrambled away to Jean-Luc whose cross picked out Jack Attrill to put Sholing four up. HT: 0-4

Jake Hoole replaced Jamie Staples at the beginning of the half. Jack Attrill played in Jake Hoole but the winger’s cross eluded everyone. Jake Hoole continued to trouble the Petersfield defence and on fifty minutes his corner was met by skipper Duncan Brown but his goal bound header was deflected into the net by Ryan Farrant. Eight minutes later Jake Hoole fails to find the net with header from Jean-Luc’s cross. On sixty minutes Dan Mortimer made his first change taking off Ashley Donald and replacing him with Jordan Geddes.

Six minutes later Steve Blackburn rested TK and replaced him with Marlon Mason. Sholing were still looking for a sixth goal on seventy two minutes when Aaron Whitmarsh found Cameron Ross who worked the ball through to Ryan Farrant then he picked out Rory Wood, looking for his fourth goal, chipped the keeper but the ball went wide of Morel’s goal. Four minutes later Rory Wood’s match was completed when the striker was replaced by Fraser McLean. Two minutes later Sholing grabbed their sixth goal when Marlon Mason finished off his own jinking run.

Sholing continued to dominate the game and Ryan Farrant evaded a tackle and set up Jake Hoole on eight one minutes but the winger failed to connect with the ball. However two minutes later he had grabbed himself a brace. On eighty three minutes Cameron Ross played in Jake Hoole who drew keeper Morel and calmly tucked the ball around him. Next it was Fraser McLean who picked out Jake Hoole for his second goal in sixty seconds. Sholing continued to go in search of more goals with the clock ticking down but Petersfield managed to deal with Jean-Luc’s & Marlon’s efforts.  FT 0-8

Steve Blackburn post-match “Tonight the boys played well as an all- round unit and everyone played their part. It is pleasing to have a good squad of player despite we know we will lose Jean-Luc & Jake to the first team Saturday as well as Marlon away at a wedding. Saturday will be a tough game at home to Gosport who tonight beat Fareham and now sit top of the table with four wins from four. So let’s move on to Saturday and see how we compete in this tough game ahead of our Soton Senior Cup next Tuesday”.
