A late volley from Jake McCarthy and a penalty save from Craig King saw the Boatmen get back to winning ways with a slender 1-0 victory over Taunton Town at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium.

McCarthy fired in a volley at the back post from a Joe Rabbetts cross as Sholing finally made their pressure tell, before Craig King made himself the hero, saving Ben Seymour’s spot kick on 81 minutes.

It was the hosts who had the better of the early stages, with Ben Seymour coming close as he got in behind the Sholing back line, before his goul-bound effort was cleared by a combination of Craig King & Brad Targett.

Sholing did manage to get a foothold of the game and had a decent chance of their own through Folivi, but his long range effort was well held by Taunton stopper Frankie Phillips. Another chance soon followed as Vinnie Tume played the ball across goal, with Taunton skipper Nick Grimes almost turning the ball into his own net.

It was Vinnie again with a golden chance to break the deadlock, but his initial shot was blocked before his rebound was smothered on the line by Phillips. Dan Mason then had a golden chance in first half stoppage time, but Phillips recovered well to save after D-Dan had rounded him initially.

The second period started how the first ended, with the Boatmen in control as they battled away in search of the elusive opener.

It eventually came with just over ten minutes of normal time remaining. The freshly introduced Joe Rabbetts found some space down the left-hand side before sending a deep cross to the back post and into the path of Jake McCarthy, who thundered a volley past Phillips to send the following Sholing support into raptures.

There was then a moment of drama only two minutes later, as Taunton were awarded a penalty for an accidental handball just inside the area. Ben Seymour stepped up, but Craig King guessed right as he dived down to his right and held onto the ball to preserve his sides slender advantage.

There was to be no further drama as the Boatmen clung onto a vital three points to put a run of four straight defeats in all competitions behind them.

Next up for the Boatmen is a trip to Surrey to face Chertsey Town on Tuesday night. Kick off 7:45pm.
