11 May - Sholing Youth Season Review

On behalf of Sholing Youth FC I would like to say thank you to Patrick Mcgonigle for all the years of being a manager starting at U10s all the way through to U18s! He has now been rewarded with an opportunity to become Manager of the Development Squad permanently so he can continue to progress not only the players who have played through the Youth age groups with him but other players joining the Club and other Sholing Youth players who have made the step up into adult football.

I am so incredibly grateful to Patrick personally who has been my right-hand man for some years now as Vice Chair and CWO and I am pleased to report he will remain in those roles which will further assist to strengthen the relationship between our Youth and Adult Sections.

Sholing FC have proven year on year our ethos of youth progression through the age groups and as a Club we ensure those players who are ready for semi-professional football are given an opportunity.

Patrick and his U18 Team have had a fantastic season what with the amazing FA Youth Cup run to 2nd Round Proper which memories will live with me up there with the FA Vase win together with finishing on a high winning the League Cup last night.

Huge thanks to Patrick's assistant Steve Terry together with Steven "Rhino" Ross who has assisted the Club for a number of years ensuring those players who are ready to step up get an opportunity to prove themselves. I am hopeful that Rhino will remain involved in the Youth set up as his experience of developing and pushing players through is vast.

Thank you also to the Team's sponsor Emerald Motor Cars your support and assistance has been invaluable.

Thank you also to the parents family members and spectators you really have been the Team's 12 man!

Finally but by no means least thank you to the players it has been a joy watching you all grow improve and give your all to the Club. Those players who are no longer eligible for U18s I wish you all the luck in the world and look forward to seeing those that remain at the Club following their progression to the Development Squad and First Team.

Moving to next season our first year U18s it's time for you to assist and mentor our new U18s following the trials passing on your experiences of this season. I cannot wait to see what we can achieve. This last season has certainly set a benchmark.

With that in mind myself and the rest of the Committee have offered the role of U18 Manager to Gary Cassell and I'm pleased to report the offer was accepted.

Gary has many years of experience of youth football and has achieved many accolades with our current U15s to include a number of Hants Cup Final wins Tyro Cup Final wins League Division winners. He certainly knows how to manage and develop football players and I know he is excited about the prospect of being our new U18 Manager and to further assist the Club in building players for our future.

The future is certainly bright for Sholing FC!

28 Feb - Budweiser Grant Update

Budweiser have today extended their partnership with the Football Association. Dave Diaper was interviewed by the FA and gave an update on the £100k grant, we were kindly awarded by Budweiser...

"Looking back at that moment last year when we found out we were receiving £100,000 from Budweiser, it still feels unbelievable."

"To get rewarded that amount of money, it’s given us hope that we can progress the club in the future. We were always a Wessex League team without much of a future beyond that, as it just wouldn’t be sustainable with the facilities that we have."

"I’ve been manager here for 19 years now and while I’m still enthusiastic, I admit that before the award came about, I was starting to flag a little bit because it was hard and we were limited with what we could do with the facilities that we had."

"So this award was a little bit of an enticement to carry on, manage the club and lead us to success. There’s now some light at the end of the tunnel and this award has given everyone a boost and some hope of moving through the pyramid if we can improve the facilities and grow the club from within. Ultimately, it’s all about the community and we want to produce our own home-grown talent and attract better players and we will be able to do that with upgraded facilities."

"A new club house is our first priority and we’ve made a start with the Budweiser money and getting plans in place. We’ve used the first cash from the grant to fund the feasibility studies about that project, which would see better facilities and a new club house. It’s a long-term project and these things always take time, but the investments made by Budweiser into grassroots football can go a long way."

"Budweiser are a terrific bunch of guys and we’re delighted to hear that they’ve extended their commitment even further."

28 Dec - End of an era as Barry Mason moves on

Barry Mason has left Sholing to sign for neighbours Hamble Club. Manager, Dave Diaper, explains the move saying:

“Yes it’s true, I spoke to Barry when I signed him on during pre-season and said that due to the size of the squad and our policy of giving youth the opportunity to progress, that he would not be starting every game. Baz still signed because he loves the Club. However, although he has made 27 appearances this season for the Boatmen, he felt frustrated at not starting games. I can fully understand and sympathise with that and when Knells (Ben Kneller, Hamble Manager) called me, I gave him permission to talk to him"

"I would like to publically thank Bazza for all he has done for the Boatmen and salute his loyalty and commitment over 556 games for the club and wish him well for the future."

Barry joined the club (when we were called VTFC) 11 years ago. He started at Salisbury and then played for Eastleigh before making the move to Portsmouth Road after Paul Doswell, Spitfires manager at the time, rang Dave Diaper to recommend Barry to him. He's always been a fans favourite for his wholehearted approach to the game and being a nice bloke off the pitch.  Barry clocked up 556 appearances for VT/Sholing and played a big part in the club winning the FA Vase in 2014.  It was Bazza's goal in the first round 1-0 win at Winchester City that set Sholing on the road to Wembley. As the eldest of the Mason's, he also was a key factor in Byron & Dan joining the club.  We wish Bazza all the best at Hamble, he'll always be a Boatmen Legend.

Barry Mason had this to add "Would just like to wish everyone at Sholing all the best for the season and the future. Had some amazing times winning a lot of things and of course the FA Vase in 2014. Great people and a great club"

Huge congratulations to our Sholing Youth team who won the prestigious "Spain Trophy" in the U17 category.  The lads went undefeated in the tournament which was held to the south of Barcelona, winning all 6 of their matches and only conceding 1 goal.  They had a perfect record in their group, beating teams from Spain, Germany & Italy, before sweeping through the knock-out rounds to face Spanish team, CD Cuatrovientos, in the Final, which they won 1-0.  A brilliant achievement and a great football & life experience for the lads.
