A much changed Sholing went out of the Southern League Challenge Cup on a wet night in Winchester. The home side were deserved winners, scoring 2 goals within a few minutes of each other in the first half and then 2 more late on in the game to give the scoreline a rather flattering look.

Team News : With 8 games in the first 18 days of January, Dave Diaper made 6 changes to Saturday's line-up. Owen Royl captained the side for the first time and a first team debut was given to Joe Smith at left back.  TJ returned from injury, playing for the first time in over a month.  Byron, D-Dan, Green, Miller, Hoole & Marv were rested.

Sholing started quite brightly, with Tobi Falodi having a couple of chances, the second of which he probably should have tucked away and then from a corner, TJ, had a stooping header tipped over the crossbar.  On 23 mins, Wort's cross from the right was met at the far post by Brad Targett, but he put it wide.  Winchester took the lead on 28 mins when a freekick from the left channel was driven low into the box where it deflected off Oli Bailey and rolled into the far corner giving Gos no chance.  3 minutes later and the home side had doubled their lead when good control and awareness by Panesar-Dower set up Oli Bailey to slot into the empty net.  HT 2-0

Much of the second half was a non-event, although there was a first team debut appearance for Harry Edmondson.  Josh Carey also came on for only his second appearance and would head against the outside of the post from close range. A minute earlier, Alex Sawyer hit a low shot from the edge of the box that was superbly tipped round the post by Birchnall.  Winchester grabbed two goals in the last 10 minutes against a stretched Sholing backline.  A left to right ball from midfield found Dom Panesar-Dower to slot past the advancing Gosney.  Then soon after, the Boatmen were exposed down the other flank as Jordan Preston was able to run unchecked into the area and he applied a cool dinked finish over Gos.  FT 4-0
