Sholing's first pre-season game of the new campaign ended in defeat at Wessex 1 side, Fawley.  However, main object of the exercise, was exactly that... exercise.  A good chance to get minutes in the tank and give a run out to as many of the squad as possible.

Sholing started brightly on a dry and hard pitch, something all clubs will have to contend with until we get some decent amount of rain this summer. Early chances were created for Pete Castle, Dan Mason & Byron Mason, but it was the home side who, against the run of play, took the lead on 20 minutes when a through ball into the right channel saw Murphy get round Gosney and slot into the net from a tight angle.

Things got worse for Sholing 4 minutes later when Billy Connor, making his debut, went down and had to be stretchered off with a knee injury.  Gutted for him and hope it's not as bad as first feared.   Lee Wort was put through on goal and appeared to be tripped, but referee waved away penalty appeals.  Tempo slowed as half time approached.  HT 1-0

Sholing were level on 52 minutes as a ball from the left to the edge of the box was hit first time on the volley by LEE WORT and it screamed into the net.  The linesman had flagged, but after consulting with him, the Referee gave the goal.   Game wasn't level for long, as on 61 mins, Fawley went back in front when a low ball across the face of the 6 yard box found the arriving Southwick at the far post to finish.

Remainder of the game saw a lot of subs and as often happens, the game became a bit disjointed.  The sudden appearance of mist around the ground, saw the last 15 mins of the match played in the gloom as it was too late to warm up the floodlights.  Sholing had two good chances to score late on, firstly Dan Mason connected well with a powerful header, but the keeper did well to push it round the post.  Then D-Dan was held back as he turned the defender with a penalty awarded.  Kev Brewster's spot-kick, saw Burch guess the right way and he pulled off a good save.  FT 2-1

On Monday evening (9th) we would appreciate the help of volunteers to do some weeding and cleaning at the ground to get the place ready for the new season.  Refreshments will be provided and ground will be open from 6pm.  Many thanks.

Next Friendly is on Saturday 14th July at Blackfield & Langley, 3pm ko
