Sholing went out of the Russell Cotes Cup at Fareham, suffering our 2nd consecutive defeat & shutout in the space of a few days.  It was an unusually lifeless performance from the Boatmen against an energetic Fareham side who deserved to go through to the Semi Final.

Apart from a shot by Dan Mason on 5 mins that was pushed away for a corner by Harding, the majority of the play in the first half was frantic, but lacking in goal mouth action.  Fareham were having a lot of joy on the flanks, exposing gaps on the wings as Sholing started with 3 at the back.  The home side got into a few good positions, but either the final ball or a rushed finish, let them down.  That wasn't the case just before half time when the "Creeksiders" took the lead.  Again, a break down the right wing wasn't closed down quick enough and a cross into the box was smacked home by Robbie PitmanHT 1-0

Sholing reverted to a back four with Brown coming on for Brewy for the restart. For the first (and sadly, only) time in the game, the Boatmen managed to string some passes together as Wort put in Marlon in behind and his cross was volleyed onto the top of the bar by Dan Mason.  However, just as the Boatmen were looking like getting back into the game, Fareham grabbed a killer second goal on 56 mins.  At the end of a series of passes, Josh Holmes low shot from the edge of the area, sneaked just inside the post.

Rest of the game was easy for the home side as Sholing continued to hit too many aimless long balls and came nowhere close to scoring. FT 2-0

Dave Diaper said afterwards : "Simply not good enough. Ok, another game with 6 players missing which isn’t ideal, but no passion, desire and too nice. We made their two Center Half’s look like world beaters. There will be training on Thursday and let’s have a reaction on Saturday. Better team won tonight, but we made it easy for them and I take full responsibility as I picked the team."
