An understrength Sholing side were forced to settle for a draw in a disappointing match with mid-table Fareham. On the day the Universal Stadium opened for free as a Community Club Day, a bumper crowd of 288 watched the Boatmen extend their unbeaten run to a ninth game, despite the end of their eight match consecutive winning run.

Team News : Sholing were missing the injured TJ Cuthbertson & Alex Sawyer. The suspended Marvin McLean, Pete Castle and Lee Wort. Plus, the unavailable Kevin Brewster & Dan Miller.  All meant a reshuffled line-up and a league debut for Duncan Brown in defence in one of five changes.  With the Development side playing local rivals Hamble Club and already giving up several players to the 1st team, Dan Mason was forced to play, despite breaking his hand at Highworth last week and wearing a protective cast.

Sholing started brightly and went close twice early on when Jake Hoole fired over the bar and Dan Mason was denied by a smart save from Fareham keeper Del Harding. Fareham were forced into an early change when Shawn Benjamin rolled his ankle and was replaced by Matt Simm just after the 20 minute mark.

Ryan Gosney pulled off two good saves, a parry away from a volley and then, when Ashley Tattersall found himself one on one with the keeper, Gos made himself big and smothered the effort near the edge of his area.

D-Dan flashed a shot wide and Bradey Norton cut into the box from the left wing and curled an effort towards the far corner, but Harding went full length to tip it wide.  Jake Hoole picked up a knock but continued after treatment albeit a bit laboured in his action. HT: 0-0

The half started with an immediate substitution with Barry Mason replacing the injured Jake Hoole. Barry fired wide, while Matt Simm did likewise for Fareham from Jay Eames cut-back.

Having been booked earlier for dissent, Jamie Bulpitt then received a second yellow after his reaction to a coming together with George Davis who was also shown a yellow card. It was the Boatmen's 5th Red card of the season thus far.

Sholing pushed for a winner, and almost made the elusive breakthrough with five minutes to play. Jean-Luc Ramdin collected the ball and broke forward, only for his 20 yard effort to rebound back off the bar, bounce down near the line and up to Rory Wood who decided to take it first time with a header, but all the pace had gone out of the ball and his effort was easy for Harding to claim.

A frustrating second half was summed up when in added time, Dan Mason burst into the box and was about to pull the trigger, but the referee pulled the game back for a freekick to Sholing, 22 yards out.  The freekick came to nothing to end a game that had started promisingly, but for the most part, was lacking intensity. Dave Diaper said afterwards: “This was very unlike us, we were flat, lethargic and not at our best. Making so many changes was far from ideal and that was reflected in the team performance. We had chances to win the game and I thought we started quite well but a draw was probably fair in the end. We hit the bar and their keeper has made some good saves, but they were dangerous on the counter-attack and at half-time we talked about not getting caught out. Having won eight in a row, it’s disappointing particularly on a day when we’re allowing people in for free, but if you can’t get three points it’s important to get one and we haven’t lost so that’s the only positive. We now move on to the Hamworthy match on Tuesday”
