Sholing returned to Wessex league action following their FA Cup exit last week with a one-sided win over Fareham Town at a wet and blustery Universal stadium.

Team News: Owen Royl is still sidelined with Shin splints. Nick Yeomans, Liam and Jack Attrill Sam Jenman were recalled to Reserves at Tadley to get some game time. Pete Castle and Zac Mouland were rested to the bench. Jordan Brooks was away on holiday.

Sholing came flying out of the blocks and were in front after just 65 seconds, with DAN MASON firing the opening shot of the match into the bottom left corner. Byron Mason almost added a second two minutes later, but his header from a Kevin Brewster free kick was parried away by the Fareham goalkeeper.

Whilst Fareham struggled to acclimatise to the wet conditions, Sholing seemed to have found their feet quickly, with Dan Mason rifling a shot into the side netting in the fifth minute. The Boatmen dictated the majority of the play in the opening period, with Brewster and McClean benefiting from sloppy Fareham defending. Both players were making good ground on either flank and were both putting dangerous balls into the box. One of which almost doubled Sholing’s lead, as Brewster whipped in a cross which Dan Mason headed wide at the far post.

On 25 minutes, the home side finally got their deserved second goal despite protest from Fareham’s defenders. Jake Hoole’s initial effort was deflected, and with the keeper committing to the winger’s shot, BYRON MASON had the simple task of taping the ball over the line.

As the goal count rose, so did the players confidence, with Sholing playing some neat tidy possession football. Kevin Brewster was enjoying the free space being presented in front of him, and the right back almost assisted the Boatmen’s third. He firstly crossed the ball in for Byron Mason, but he headed the ball wide. No soon later, Brewster again put a good ball into the box, with Barry Mason this time attempting to acrobatically volley the ball in, but he failed to connect with the ball how he would’ve liked.

After half an hour of which Dan Miller and Owen Roundell controlled proceedings at the back, Fareham finally carved out an opening. Simon Woods was put through on goal but his effort was turned onto the post by Ryan Gosney, before Matt Andrews struck a shot wide from 18 yards.

Ashley Tattersall dragged a long range effort wide for the visitors before Jake Hoole had the last opportunity of the first half, but his shot from Owen Roundell’s knock down flew wide of the left post. HT 2-0

The second half continued on from the first, with Sholing starting strongly. Kevin Brewster again almost provided a goal for Sholing, with his free kick in the 49th minute only needing a touch on its way through the crowded box.

JAKE HOOLE extended the Boatmen’s lead five minutes into the second half with a precise finish from the corner of the box into the bottom right corner of the net, after neat play from Byron Mason.

Lee McCombie had a shot for Fareham which Gosney saved comfortably, before Jake Hoole smashed an effort high and wide with half an hour to play. Byron Mason came the closest to scoring another in the game with a low powerful shot which seemed to surprise Jamie Barwick in the Fareham goal, as he only just managed to keep the shot out.

The game quieten down for the final 15 minutes, and the game wrapped up with Jamie Phillips firing a long range shot down Ryan Gosney’s throat. FT 3-0
