THE Boatmen sank US Portsmouth in their FA Vase replay despite challenging conditions, and maintained their 11 match unbeaten run, winning the contest 6-0

Both sides have a strong nautical history, and it suited the state of the pitch in the first half. Yet it was Sholing who seemed to be the best suited to water-faring on a sodden pitch. The hosts, a team that used to be made up of naval recruits, had the best opportunity to open the scoring, but when Mark Christie was played through he wasted his chance to test Ryan Gosney and skied his volleyed effort over from 10 yards.

Portsmouth’s sported a Barcelona-like kit but it was in fact Sholing that played more like the Catalan giants. The first signs of the promise of the half coming from Dan Masons speculative 30-yard dipping volley. Sholing’s opener wasn't far behind however, and after 17 minutes JAMIE BULPITT slotted the visitors ahead. Bulpitt, who set up the equaliser in the first ties 1-1 draw, picked the ball up in the centre before setting off on a mazy run and sliding the ball past Peter Houkes.

The second came three minutes later. Kevin Brewsters free-kick was floated invitingly into the area, and met by BYRON MASON, whose powerful header back across goal and in off the post, gave Dave Diapers men a grip on the tie.

The lively JAMIE BULPITT grabbed Sholing’s next. The third in seven minutes. Once again receiving the ball deep in the opposition half but this time he sent a dipping low shot past the helpless Houkes from 25 yards.

A combination a wing-play left fans of Sholing clearing their diaries for the 3rd round fixture at home to Laverstock and Ford. James Davis impressive run down the left flank allowed him to fire a cross, which US Portsmouth failed to clear and MARVIN MCLEAN capitalising on with a composed finish.

Sholing’s fifth came in similar fashion, once again James Davis working a cross from the left hand side and DAN MASON steering the ball home from inside the 6 yard box for his 14th of the season and to leave the travelling fans hoping for a repeat of the 9-0 thrashing of the same opposition two years ago.  HT 0-5

But any hope of a repeat, in the shadow of the Spinnaker Tower, were quashed as Pompey, all at sea in the first half came out in a more regimented fashion in the second period.

But once again man of the match Bulpitt provided the moment of magic to allow the showboating Boatmen to add to their impressive tally. His precise reverse through ball sent MARV MCLEAN one on one with the ‘keeper and the winger made no mistake. The goal taking Sholing’s total to 13 in two away matches.

With the game over, Sholing coasted the remainder of the match, but still created a number of chances. Firstly Davis teasing shot hit the inside of the post, rolled along the line... and hit the other post! before coming out to be cleared. Then McLean, chasing a hat-trick, watching his shot roll agonisingly across the face of the goal and just wide.

Despite last Friday’s scare, the 20 travelling fans knew that by the docks of the maritime city, the ‘Victory’ was never far away. FT 0-6

View from the Stands:  Great performance by the Boatmen, who were right at it from the kick off and looked like we might score with every attack.  We knocked the ball around at a high tempo and showed the Wessex 1 opposition, little mercy with some well worked and well taken goals.  We will now be at home to Laverstock & Ford in the FA Vase 1st Round on Saturday 31st October, 3pm.

Thanks to US Pompey for their hospitality.  Thanks once again to the Sholing supporters for turning out on a filthy night and doubling the attendance in the process.
