The reserves played their 2nd Wyvern Shield group game against a young Moneyfields team who also won their first group game on saturday.

The slippery conditions were always going to allow for plenty of goalmouth action and errors which proved to be the case as the game went on.

Moneyfields started better than Sholing having more possession however as the half progressed and Danny Cox and Serge Fon gained control of the midfield area we asserted our passing game allowing Macaully Smith to dictate much of the passing movement going forward. On 23 minutes he found plenty of space in his own half on a counter attack and after gaining 20 yards he executed a superb ball into the path of Cain Prentice who continued his excellent form from saturday by dispatching a low shot past the keeper from just inside the area.

On 29 minutes Terry New received the ball out wide and once getting the ball under control superbly nutmegged the opposition defender delivering a low cross to the near post where Cain Prentice got accross the keeper to slide home from 6 yards.

At this point we were in total control playing some great football with everyone wanting the ball highlights being a wonder save by the opposing keeper from Macaully Smith and us twice hitting the bar however Moneyfields were nearly allowed back into the game from a needless free kick conceded right on the edge of our box and a free header from a corner which fortunately hit the post and rebounded into the hands of onlooking keeper Rory Anderson. HT 2-0

Hopefully the let offs at the end of the first half reminded the boys, as on saturday, that we must play at a good tempo for 90 minutes and that the game is never over regardless of how dominant we may have been. Moneyfields came out for the second half fired up and started the better team reducing the deficit on 56 minutes with a good run from the right wing being despatched past Rory Anderson.

As is proving to be the case we then went up another gear and Cain Prentice completed his hat trick on 62 minutes with a follow up after the keeper had spilt a shot from Coby Wilson to restore our 2 goal lead. Frustratingly Moneyfields went straight up our end and within 60 seconds we gave away a needless penalty, due to a reckless challenge on the edge of our penalty area, which was despatched leaving Rory Anderson with no chance.

Again this appeared to spur the boys on and our football and quality of movement and passing in the last 20 minutes of the game was excellent leading to us hitting the bar again twice and the opposing keeper making numerous saves to keep us at bay however, Terry New, Coby Wilson and Macaully Smith all added to the scoreline with Moneyfields gaining a third with 2 minutes to go to reduce the deficit to 6-3 and leaves us with a 100 per cent record in the Wyvern Shield to date. FT 6-3

"We are disappointed to concede 3 goals, leaving us with a rather scrappy scoreline, and the result doesnt necessarily reflect on the overall performance or the dominance we had on the game for large periods. We need to bring a level of consistency to our performance throughout the 90 minutes and not play in patches when we need to after being pulled out of our comfort zone through the opposition scoring. That said much of our attacking play was great to watch and we could/should have had double figures and to a large degree only the performance of the opposition keeper stopped that happening. Our counter attacking through Coby, Terry, Macaully and Cain was very good. It is still very early days however the young team is developing well and look to be enjoying their football which reflects in both the performances and results." - Mark Stupple
