Sholing were able to field five of the FA Vase heroes and welcomed back Marvin McLean for his first appearance since scoring the winner at Wembley.

On a hot day Sholing very quickly got into a short passing game, but Godalming were relying on a long ball game where TJ Cuthbertson & Stuart Mott dealt with their threat albeit at the expense of a number of corners. Goalkeeper Rory Anderson was at ease in the Sholing goal and made an array of comfortable saves.

Sholing’s pressure told in the 25 minute when Danny Cox’s corner was met by the head of Lewis Fennemore to put Sholing 1-0 ahead. The match became a counter attack game and Godalming did have their own chances but couldn’t convert anything positive. They were left too rue wasted chances when Sholing scored a replica copy of their 1st goal. This time Danny Cox’s 43rd minute corner was met by the head of skipper Byron MasonHT Godalming 0-2 Sholing

With no changes at half time winger Marvin McLean stretched the Godalming defence on numerous occasions; he was certainly enjoying the sunshine. Then on 55 mins trialist Taurean Manders replaced full back Jude Nwachukwu. On 62 mins Wembley McLean & Fennemore were replaced by Nick Watts & Barry Mason.

After 65 minutes the referee called for a drinks break and manager Mick Marsh used this to introduce the remain three substitutes PJ McLean Nathan Lynch Kane Crisp replacing Stuart Mott Dan Mason & Danny Cox.

Sholing showed their dominance and on 69 mins should have put the game beyond Godalming when Alex Baldacchino put in Nathan Lynch only to see his effort parried away by the goalkeeper for a corner. There was a scare when skipper Byron Mason was injured in a challenge but returned to the field of play after treatment.

Sholing go into Tuesday’s night match at Bemerton still unbeaten with two wins and a draw in their three friendlies so far. Mick Marsh said “I’m happy with today’s performance but most of all we notched up a clean sheet”
