Sholing made their second trip of the week to Bashley Road for another cup tie having run out 4-2 winners in the Red Insure Cup on Tuesday night. This game was the start of another possible 'March to the Arch' in the FA Trophy with the carrot of £2,500 at stake for the winners as well as home tie in the next round to either Tiverton or Wantage.

Today's line up saw seven changes from Tuesday's victory with Matt Brown, Kevin Brewster, Alex Sawyer, Marvin McLean coming back into the team after being rested and Stuart Mott, Nick Watts & Sam Wilson stepping back up from the bench. Nathan Lynch returned to the bench with Alex Baldachinno Tobi Adekunle & Jude Nwachukwu reverting to the bench. Injuries to Mike Byrne substituted at half time was unavailable and Barry Mason with a slight knock moved down to the bench. Jack Smith donned the Captain's armband.

Sholing kicked off and started positively with Sam Wilson having an early attempt on the Bashley goal quickly followed by a foul on Dan Mason but Kevin Brewster's free kick was easily cleared by Jemel Rose. Again with Sam Wilson getting into the Bashley defence he shot over the bar on 6 mins. A minute later Bashley had their 1st attempt on Matt Brown's goal when skipper Chris Hall shot over the bar from 25yds.

Sholing were finding inroads to the Bashley defence with the lively Sam Wilson and Alex Sawyer looking to support the forwards. Dispite looking yards offside the assistants flag stayed down Alex Sawyer wasted a glorious chance to put Sholing on the road to Wembley when he fired his shot one on one with keeper Maher, high & wide.

Sholing continued to press forward and a Kevin Brewster corner found TJ's head but he just failed to hit the target. Jemel Rose half cleared another corner which fell to Dan Mason but saw his effort cleared by Callum Maher's feet. Another Kevin Brewster set piece found Stuart Mott's head who steered his header inches past the post.

With Sholing pushing forward a counter attack by Bashley's forward Clive Makoni was pulled back by Stuart Mott who received a yellow card from referee Ogles on 16 mins for his action. The resulting free kick was headed clear by TJ but the ball fell to Nuno Pereira whose effort was cleared by Stuart Mott,. Kevin Brewster's long ball found Nick Watts wide on the right but Alex Sawyer failed to get on to Watts cross. Dan Mason & Nick Watts linked well but the final ball adjudged Sam Wilson to be offside.

Bashley made another rare attack on the Sholing goal when Clive Makoni's shot was saved by Matt Brown & finally cleared by Stuart Mott on the half hour. Bouwe Bosma felt the full force of the ball but despite treatment was replaced by Ashley Booker. Sholing's frustration continued when Sam Wilson received a lecture from the referee for a foul on half way line. Dan Mason set up Sam Wilson but once again Bashley keeper Maher came to their resecue. Marvin McLean's surging run past Ronan

Moore let him whip in a low cross which Dan Mason opted to head the ball at ankle height but was off target. With half time approaching Bashley felt they should have gone in leading the game when Brad Morris set up Nuno Pereira but his shot skimmed off Matt Brown's crossbar. Jack Smith once again set up Marvin McLean on the left and his cross was completely missed by the Bashley defence striking a surprised Dan Mason in the chest. With the game in stoppage time a long punt by Maher chased down by Pereira who collided with Matt Brown, the game was further delayed as Pereira received treatment. HT 0-0

Nuno Pereira didn't return for the 2nd half and was replaced by Adam Drodge. Lewis Crook set up sub Drodge who shot tamely at Matt Brown. Bashley came at Sholing positively and a five man move resulted in full back Aaron Dunne shotting wildely on 51 mins. Sholing's 1st clear effort of the half saw Dan Mason miss hit Sam Wilson's cross. Sholing began to take control of the match with back four all working well TJ supporting Stuart Mott allowing him to attack at every opportunity Taurean Manders & Jack Smith were also geeting forward well. On 59 mins Sholing introduced Alex Baldachinno for Sam Wilson. Another Kevin Brewster corner was punched clear by keeper Maher after Watts had won the corner. After only being on the field for 5 mins Alex Baldachinno was denied by Maher after being set up by Nick Watts & Dan Mason interplay.

Then on 66 mins Sholing were forced into 2nd change with Jack Smith struggling with a leg injury. Jude Nwachukwu replaced him and swapped full back roles with Taurean Manders switching to left back, Kevin Brewster took over the captain's role. Marvin McLean again set up Baldachinno whose shot was saved by the feet of Maher. Kevin Brewster's shot went wide on 70 mins. A pivotal moment in the game when a clearence over the top set up Lewis Crook with Stuart Mott (already on a yellow card) shepparded Crook to shoot tamely without make a rash challenge. Brad Morris saw his effort cleared by Stuart Mott. At the other end Alex Baldachinno was injecting much needed pace into the game and was fouled just outside the area but the resulting free kick was wasted.

On 77 mins Tobi Adekunle replaced Marvin McLean and Nick Watts switched over to the right with Tobi on the left. Also strangley with only reserve goalkeeper Liam Hopkins available on the bench Bashley manager introduced him as a forward replacing Lewis Crook.

Clive Makoni found himself inside the Sholing area but Stuart Mott conceded the corner to deny Makoni, the resulting corner found substitute Hopkins but saw his shot saved by Matt Brown. Tobi Adekunle was looking lively on the left and five minutes after coming on set up the opening goal for Dan Mason to score his third goal in four days at Bashley Road. The ball came to DAN MASON 10 yards out, he took a touch and volleyed the ball as he was falling over past the keeper and into the net. Tobi picked up a hamstring injury and laboured through the dying minutes of the match. Sholing did enough in the closing stages to progress through to the 1st qualifying round of the FA Trophy to face Tiverton Town at home on 1st November. FT 0-1

Post match views: Despite Bashley's lowly league position both cup matches this week showed they are no pushovers and are difficult to breakdown. Even though Sholing are currently not fielding a regular 11 starters the management are getting the team to grind out results we now stand in our last 10 matches: 5 wins 3 draws 2 defeats. 18 goals for 10 against. Today our back four all had solid performances with Taurean Manders just edging the man of the match. No doubt Wednesday's Russell Cotes cup match will see more team changes before we return to league action next Saturday to high flying Taunton Town - Report by Greg Dickson
