SHOLING striker Dan Mason scored a brace as the Boatmen put five past Laverstock & Ford in the second round of the Wessex League Cup. Mason also bagged two goals when the sides met a fortnight ago in the FA Vase, and Laverstock and Ford had an even unhappier return today.

The game was given the all clear to go ahead by the Referee when he arrived, although typically, the worst weather then hit the ground in the run up to kick-off.  By the time the game was underway, there was a strong, gusty wind and driving rain straight down the length of the pitch.

It took a while for both teams to come to terms with the conditions, so little happened for the first 25 minutes or so.  Sholing had the wind behind them, but it wasn't much of a help as through balls would pick up pace and go out of play or through to the keeper.

However, on 31 minutes, Sholing go the breakthrough when Marvin Mclean broke down the left wing and laid an inviting ball across the box which DAN MASON smacked in giving Sholing the lead. There was a sense of controversy which led to the goal as Laverstock & Ford claimed Mclean carried the ball out of play before laying it on a plate for Mason.

In the 35th minute, Mason contributed to Sholing’s second as he twisted & turned in the box before seeing his shot tipped onto the bar by the keeper, but it bounced down onto DOUG ROWE'S head to nod over the line.

A few minutes later, the Laverstock goal keeper Ryan Proud ventured out of his area to put the ball out for a throw in. Kevin Brewster attempted to catch the wandering keeper out by cheekily lofting it towards goal but was Proud stood strong and caught the effort.  Then, Rowe had a one-on-one opportunity to extend the advantage but Proud was at hand again to save.

Sholing’s third came right on half time with a free kick just outside the box on the right hand side. Brewster whipped in the free kick which BYRON MASON guided with his head down into the far corner of the net.  HT 3-0

DAN MASON claimed his 6th goal in 3 games when he survived an individual battle as he skipped through the Laverstock defence to get into a shooting position and he coolly slotted past the keeper’s right hand and in at the far post. His second goal of the game took Masons tally to 23 goals in just 21 games this season.

On 78 minutes, Marv Mclean was clean through as he attempted to get his shot between the goal keeper’s legs but Proud quickly closed them to block the effort. The rebound kindly fell to substitute NICK YEOMANS who tapped home to complete the scoring. The goal - coming just days after Yeomans 18th birthday - further suggests that the Sholing team is blessed with a depth of resources from the Development team, having already seen Jake Hoole recently promoted into the first team

To their credit, Laverstock never let their heads drop and although never really threatened Gosney's goal, did have a couple of shots flash just wide.  Nevertheless Sholing were able to claim their fifth clean sheet in their current run, which has now seen them win seven on the bounce, scoring 22 goals along the way.
