THERE was no happy return for the seven former Sholing players, or as it turned out, the referee, as the hosts ran out comfortable 2-0 winners. Despite a high tempo approach to the game a Follands team managed by ex-Sholing Reserve coach (albeit, briefly), Dave Herbert and a line-up that included Liam Golding and Cain Prentice couldn't stop Sholing progressing in the Wessex League cup.
The Boatmen were almost ahead in just five minutes, but Dan Mason's goal was harshly disallowed for a push on his marker. The injury to Dan Dove in midweek, that will see the midfielder out for up to eight weeks, forced Dave Diaper into a reshuffle. A rested Jamie Bulpitt meant Sholing set up with an attacking line-up.
The Mason trio were flanked by James Davis and Marv McLean, and joined by Kelly upfront. It was LEWIS KELLY who opened the scoring. Kevin Brewster's corner floated in to Dean Faithful, and his goal bound header was turned in by Kelly inside the 6 yard box on 23 mins.
Follands Captain, and former Sholing midfielder, Jamie Craven, had already tested Ryan Gosney with a free-kick, but they struggled to create any chance of note before another former Boatman, Cain Prentice, fired his shot at the ‘keeper
MARV MCLEAN was able to double Sholing's lead just before half-time. After an expert pass from Barry Mason split a square Folland back line, the winger was able to control and roll a precise finish under Jarris Hixon
Despite their forward thinking line-up, Sholing were, ironically, being inspired by their back line. Brewster tested Hixon with a trademark free-kick, and Dan Millers imperious performance further encouraging the Ultras into a rendition of ‘You’ll never beat Dan Miller’. HT 2-0
The second half was more a war of attrition. Neither side settling into a rhythm as the game became punctuated by injuries. Firstly former Folland custodian, Gosney, whose knee injury spared his blushes after being caught out of his area.
The turning point of a bland half came with half an hour to go, an injury to referee Bruce Waymark! The incident saw Waymark stumble and fall sparking the 92 in attendance into jeers and laughter. However, the extent of what looked like a twisted ankle were soon felt as he was carried from the field. Assistant Adrian Cook took charge, while Sholing kit man, Terry Miller, took charge of the chequered flag, much to the delight of the Ultras.
The closest Folland came to scoring was Sam Kirkwoods 20-yard effort that flew wide, but there was never really any threat to Sholing's two-goal lead.
And the closest the home side came was when Dan Mason's header fell to man of the match Dan Miller. However Miller was unable to dig the ball out from under his feet and add to his two goals this season.
Brewster then had a second chance to deliver the ball, this time it fell to Jake Hoole and the debutant tested the ‘keeper within minutes of his introduction.
The dying minutes saw former plane makers keeper, Gosney slice a clearance, this almost set up Prentice but his squared ball was also sliced by Matt Camfield and eventually cleared by McLean.
It was almost a case of when and not how the next goal would come for Sholing, but Follands were able to survive a barrage of corners. Kevin Brewster racking up most of his running for the day, taking four successive corners, back-to-back. One of which was deflected onto the post by a defender and Dan Mason, clearly desperate to keep us his goal-a-game ratio, put two headers just over the bar. Sholing will now be at home to Laverstock & Ford in the next round (as well as playing them in the FA Vase) FT 2-0

View from the stands: A much more comfortable game for the Boatmen than I was expecting. Never really felt like a local derby and in fact, the second half had the feel of a pre-season friendly. That wasn't helped by the slightly comical injury to the Referee. I'm sure he wasn't laughing as he seemed in some pain, but it's in-built to every player & football fan to poke fun at Refs when the tables are turned on them.
Update: We later found out that Bruce Waymark had fractured his ankle & suffered ligament damage. Bruce thanked Sholing physio, Tasha Bowers for her prompt assistance, that probably kept the damage to a minimum. Sholing wish Bruce all the best for a speedy recovery.
Back to the game and considering Folland's had 7 ex-Sholing players in their team, apart from Lewis Fear (who was Folland's best player by a country mile) they weren't really playing like they had a point to prove to Dave Diaper. A lot of credit for that, of course, is down to Sholing defending well and always being in control of the game. More goals would have been nice, but with 7 days until the next game, the players now get a deserved rest.
The squad will be bolstered by a new striker, the signing of which, we will announce Sunday night or Monday morning.
